Re: Who's over 100F this year ?

109 in Dallas! Man, they're calling for 106 down here in Austin which would still be a record high. Not in our area, anyway. We've got a clay soil that shifts dramatically with the season that makes basements problematic (or so I'm told; it does break many a concrete slab foundation). No basements i...

Thanks Chris! I have been warned that I can take as many pictures of the frogs as I want as long as we have more kid pictures than frog (and fish) pictures ... :D

Thanks! I always get a kick out of these two critters when they come to the front of the viv and look at us. They've got a bit of attitude!

Re: Our azureus viv

Those Pet Tech ledges are very clever and make for what appears to be a very efficient use of space. Are they light weight? They are very light weight. I exchanged email with the vendor when some of the smaller shelves were not holding well and he suggested the extra strength magnets. Part of that ...

Re: Suggestions needed please

I have a similar background coming from the fish hobby and taking my first foray into darts earlier this year. Here are my opinions on a few topics: Water circulation - agreed that this is the fishkeeper in us coming out :) I had the same concern, but so far the still water in the false bottom has n...

Re: Howdy from Austin

The multies certainly cannot rival the beauty of a ram, but what an attitude! I started my colony with 8 multies (just under 3/4 inch) and within 2 months they started breeding. Today at any given time there are 30 to 40 individuals out - they take over just like a creeping fig :) Truly a fascinatin...

Re: Howdy from Austin

Hey Jon! Thanks for the warm welcome! White calvus are beautiful, but I am maxed out on space!! Multies, brevis, and caudopunctatus have been breeding like crazy. I have to swing by Amazonia one of these days to trade in some fry so I will tell Caroline hi. Most of my stock came from Dave at DRAF in...

Re: Howdy from Austin

Seems to be a common path, fish -> frogs!

I always loved German Blue Rams - I thought about them again recently, but opted for more shellies :) None of them have displaced multies as my favorite. Funny how a "few" turn into dozens in short order :)

Re: Our azureus viv

Very nice viv - love the mods, especially the fan. Thanks Phil! I found myself placing the internal circulation fan in different parts of the viv to try and find the optimal spot for good airflow to reduce condensation. Then I noticed my kids' pile of magnets on the other side of the room...now I c...

Re: Our azureus viv

Here are more pictures of the inhabitants. This is Big Spot - named for the larger spot on her nose. We suspect it is a female based on her back arch, but we're newbies and guessing so your opinions are most welcome! She is very bold and often walks to the front of the viv to stare at the humans on ...

Our Dendrobates tinctorious 'Azureus' vivarium

Here's version 2.0 of our vivarium, home to 0.0.2 azureus. We started out with a 40B vert that sprung a leak, so we quickly replaced that with this Zoomed. I kind of expected to "upgrade" the vivarium, so the background was simple black shelf paper and the ledges are all Pet-tech magnetic ...

Re: Howdy from Austin

Thanks! Yeah they are awesome to observe. I have L. multifasciatus, L. caudopunctatus, L. brevis M'toto, and L. ocellatus 'gold'. The multies are my personal favorite, but the punks are very cool. My occies are bulldogs - they regularly attack me while cleaning their tank with all 1.25 inches of the...

Thanks for the warm welcome! My choice in fish will bore most people - most shellies are brown with brown stripes ;) Looking forward to meeting other froggers in the Austin area!

Re: How to keep mites out of FF cultures ?

Thanks! I figured out my issue with attachments. Here are the images. I was not worried with the smaller mites - these giant ones freaked me out, especially when my second hydei culture was beyond teeming with them. I probably should have taken a picture of that crazy infested culture but I ran it r...

Re: How to keep mites out of FF cultures ?

As a newbie I got burned by bringing in hydei cultures with grain mites from a commercial vendor. Now I'm working on clearing them out. I've implemented a few practices that I picked up from a variety of sources (these are not my ideas, just what I am doing): ⋅ Keep only 4 of each culture,...

Re: Exo Terra Monsoon review needed !

I seen something about this from Mike at NEHerp. He had stated products sold after June 2011 were V2.0. I purchased a unit from Josh back in Febrauary - it's stamped 6/11 and 2 weeks ago it emptied it's tank overnight in the viv so it looks like I just missed the cut off :( . I was able to drain th...

Howdy from Austin

I'm Jim from Austin TX. I've been in the fish hobby for 25+ years mostly focusing on keeping shell dwellers from Tanganyika (I have 4 species) and I recently added Tang cats (lucipinnis) to the collection. I've been lurking for about 6 months and researching / building / rearranging my vivarium. My ...
