Sterilizing big branches -methods ?

Postby pa.walt » Sun Oct 25, 2015 9:29 am

Does anyone have a way to sterilize big branches that won't fit in a microwave to nuke them. besides soaking in bleach since it affects me.

If bleach is not tolerable, then just soaking completely in water for several days /week is somewhat of a decent alternative as is leaving in a black closed trash bag in the hot summer heat for a couple days.

Most woods that do not have sap, or fragrance 'can be' ok for our purposes.

Manzanita is very good -heavy
Ghostwood is ok, it degrades a little quicker than manz
Cork bark is excellent - flats and tubes

I'd avoid collected wood from the backyard or great outdoors unless great steps are taken. There is almost a 100% chance that collected wood that has contact with soil will have some undesirable insect mooching a ride on it - and into your viv.

I suggest a good washing outside with a pressure washer or hose with nozzle and rinse with hydrogen peroxide. I have also heard of folks using bath tubs to soak wood in hot water after knocking the loose nasty things off of the wood. I would not put wild collected wood into your viv without a good cleaning. I would not use bleach either, it can soak into pores of wood and cause problems.
