CANCELLED due to Government shutdown affecting a lot of the speakers and planner

You are receiving this email because you have registered to attend or to receive more information regarding the 2013 Reptile & Amphibian Law Conference & Workshop in Washington D.C.

The 2013 National Reptile & Amphibian Law Symposium & Workshop scheduled for November 8-10 in Washington, D.C. has been canceled and will be re-scheduled for early in 2014 if possible.

Even with the resolution of the federal shutdown, the co-hosting organizations have determined it will be impossible to hold the 2013 National Reptile & Amphibian Law Symposium & Workshop as planned.

After many weeks of discussion between the event co-hosts, it has been decided that it would be better to re-schedule than to attempt to put together the event this year, even in a reduced format.

As at last year's event, many of the confirmed speakers and panelists for the 2013 event were to be representatives of federal agencies, all of which have been directly impacted by the shutdown. Whether it was D.C.-based agencies such as the US Fish & Wildlife Service that were unable to submit panelists or coordinate topics, or agencies that would have to travel such as the FDA and CDC that were unable to submit travel requests, the time remaining is just not enough to co-ordinate the myriad details of an event of this size and nature.

Once these agencies and their representatives have returned from the shutdown, we will coordinate with them and the co-hosts of the event, AZA, PIJAC, USARK, ARAV, NRAAC, and George Washington University, to re-schedule the event in D.C. for early 2014

For more information on the re-scheduled National Reptile & Amphibian Law Symposium & Workshop in Washington, D.C., when it becomes available, please visit our website at http://nraac.org.

it's back on !!!

You are receiving this message because you had registered to attend the
2013 reptile law event in Washington D.C. that was cancelled.

The reptile and amphibian law symposium at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., cancelled due to the federal government shutdown, has been rescheduled for March 7-9, 2014, at the same location.

Speakers, panelists, and schedules for the event are being revised to include new panelists unavailable for the original date, as well new topics brought forward by the FDA's decision to regulate the pet food marketplace.

Registrants, panelists, and speakers of the 2013 event will be contacted to confirm they will be attending the 2014 symposium, and need not register again.

Co-hosted by the National Reptile and Amphibian Advisory Council (NRAAC), Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians (ARAV), Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC), United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK) and the George Washington University (GWU) School of Law, this free event will be the only reptile and amphibian law symposium scheduled by those groups in 2014.

A revised schedule and panelist list will be posted for the 2014 event within the next few weeks as we confirm panelists and topics.
If you are planning on participating in the re-scheduled event please let us know and so we can bring your prior registration info forward, and you will not have to re-register.
If you will be unable to attend the 2014 event, please let us know as well, so that we can remove your registration from our files.

Thank you for your reply!

Phil,

Can you do the board/community a huge favor and find out if they are going to record any of the lectures?
In this day and age almost all of lectures held are recorded. It would be fantastic if everyone that can't make it would be able to listen to some of the things that are said.

Since you are already in DC you should swing by and see the Amazonia at the national zoo.

A huge take-away from this show is that we, as a hobby, MUST start to have an actual organization with members who are willing to do work and represent the hobby. This is not chicken little the sky is falling type stuff here folks. Laws are being enacted 50 different times in 50 different states plus Federal so the barn door is already wide open for the horse to run out...

When a child gets sick from a dart frog and it splashes across CNN and all the countries newspapers - a shit storm of legislature will follow to key on the bad, dangerous, injurious frogs and they will KEY on the word 'poison'. It's incredible it hasn't happened yet.

We are WAY Johnny-come-lately to the party and have zero organization and gobs and gobs of infighting and personal hissy fits.

I will soon start to work to fix this. We will start to have an organization. If you are someone that's been in the hobby for over 8 years 'or so' or is someone with some particular skill or can bring something to the table - I'll be reaching out to you soon. It's high time to put away the personal feuds and hissy fits. We ALL need to come together on this.

Stay tuned folks.

Also, to come back to the 'social club' aspect of a group.
If anyone thinks that everyone in our hobby belongs in an association formed to promote ethics, lineage tracking, proper husbandry ect., etc., they need to rethink what happens once you let the lions (dirtbags) in...and this hobby (mainly the business end, but more than enough hobby examples also ) has a crap-ton of lions.
If a get together where you drink a few beers and chat about things is what ya want, simple.
If a working union of like minded responsible breeders who have proven themselves on the levels and concerns expressed is what you are looking for, good luck. TWI and all it's 'heavy hitters' tried for years to get it going , somewhat. But in the end they never were even capable of tracking given lineage...with TONS of offered volunteer help, mine included.
Why is it like herding cats to get an association started ? One reason is this hobby happens to attract some of the most bat-shit crazy hobbyists you can imagine, my self included. But also because of the HUGE divergence of wishes, understanding, profit scales, experience, greed, lack of greed, ethics, lack of ethics...in other words, we have a bunch of crazies with totally different wants and needs from the hobby. And, there are plenty of froggers praying there is never any mandated or heavily suggested practices heading their froggin way, at all.
Darts with parasites are analogous to mixed tanks, there are no known benefits to the frogs with either.

If tone is more important to you than content, you are at the wrong place.

To further add to this...

We need an organization, NOT so much as to lay down rules and by-laws and procedures and officers, but to write and chart our history and to be able to provide some small amount of info- species, breedings, numbers, people, names ect. NO need to name names or collections. This info will only be of a general sort to help the hobby. No one will ever be made to tally their animals ect.

This is going to be absolutely needed when...not if....WHEN the child-gets-sick scenario happens and HSUS, PETA ect start salivating and try to kick in our door.

I got a glimpse of what those nutball groups are doing at the above conference, and you better believe when exotic animals lawyers, and there are a small handful, want to help us defend our little frog hobby....we had BEST have all the info we can muster ready to help them to help us. It's just that simple.

TWI - lineage, zoo tracker yada yada =all doomed to fail.

forming a group with history and faces and names and information and paperwork on how these animals are not dangerous = NEEDED YESTERDAY.
