How far have you relocated with frogs?

Postby jig1 » Wed Jun 01, 2011 6:42 pm

How far have you moved with frogs? I mean moving to another city,state,...country? Did you take them with you in a vehicle? ship them? Personally I moved from kentucky to california with an azureus. I drove with mine. He was in a very well inulated and I monitored him all the time. this is also my submission for the contest.

This is a great topic.

I've flown (USAir) with frogs a few times in carry on luggage and stored under my seat in a styrofoam box and a single cool pack, that many other passengers eyeballed. Flight was from Miami to Philadelphia. No problems of any sort.

I dont know if it was the age of the frog at the time or what but after the move he was alot bolder.

We found a cuban frog down in Miami, in my sister in laws back yard. My kids had me go get a cricket keeper (for crickets), and put together a mini-"viv" (got a small aquarium) for the frog while we were at the hotel (2 weeks mind you-no clue what the cleaning lady thought). And then, cart the thing all the way back home to Grand Rapids (driving) because it was so cute. So for me, from Miami, FLA, to Grand Rapids, MI. Dead of winter back home too when we got back, cold January.

I drove my red eye tree frogs, pair of azureus, and four auratus from New Orleans to Los Angeles over 3 days in the u-haul truck with me. Their tanks went in the back but the frogs were in Rubbermaid containers in the front passenger seat. All arrived fine with no ill effects.

Omg, I have traveled back and forth between California and Florida,.Atlanta more times than I want to remember...by car!! With no less than 30 frogs, all pets. I once traveled to Germany and left my frogs with someone...disastrous results! since then, I vowed never to travel anywhere I can't take my babies! ;) my experiences with frogs has taught me that they need a much higher level of care and expertise than a neighbor or friend can provide. So, I pack my critters into my mini van (separate critter keeper carriers) and they go where I go. This usually means no stopping for meals, and its hard trying to think up excuses for strange frog noises coming from the hotel rooms!! ;) I tell the hotel people NO housekeeping or chemicals, due to severe allergies. Just to be safe, I usually cover the tanks with cloth if I have to leave the hotel room. Upon check out, there are usually a few ' guests' (bugs) lingering in the room...a parting gift! ;) alllll in alllll, its a bit rough traveling this way, but I feel better knowing my froggies are ok.

I just got done moving about 2 hours away.

How I ended up with disaterous results I have no clue. Well I have some clues. The moving company had me remove all my frogs 3 days earlier than I should have had to remove them from their tanks. The day of the actual driving was around 95 degrees. Every tank I did not take my self ( I had limited room) was trashed and all my supplies for redoing them were packed and still not found. There was another person driving another vehicle with some tanks in them with strict instructions to keep the AC on and not turn it off. Needless to say he did not listen. More frogs dead

I lost a ton of frog ( well not a ton but you get the point) many adult breeders, alot of tree frogs and half my adult axololtl group. Needed to say it was not a fun trip.

A little over four years ago I moved about 50 occupied vivs and about 150 frogs from Milan Michigan to Chicago (270 miles) in the winter (temps of about 20 below freezing) by driving them with about three trips , two vehicles and a lot of stressing. Not a frog was lost.
Very sorry to hear about the losses Kristy. That sucks.

Rich did you move them with the frogs in the tanks? How did you do the really big ones that maybe had tads in the water?

All of the frogs that were in-viv stayed as such.
The Uberviv got torn down , which was a huge bummer. I was able to save a bunch of peat bricks and all the plants.
The rest of the vivs got moved and if a tad did not make it, it did not make it. I know I had at least three Robalo tads in a brom when I moved them and all three stayed in the brom through the full move.
90 gallon vivs with water in them are heavy, BTW :D .

I've driven 300+ miles in cold weather with a large Exo and trio of pums strapped into the passenger seat with a seatbelt....false bottom with a bit of water, sloshing around. Tads in broms.

No worrys. Toss em in the car, tank and all.

I would remove large wood or rock features and anything that could "crash".....tape up the doors and lids....
