Breeding for specific traits - Thoughts ?

But maybe they should be. We're breeding for specific traits no matter what we do. We can't but do it with the limited genetically unique stocks we start with. Given that maybe we should feed off the drab, shy, and odd frogs. Lets face it there not going back into the wild - their here to stay. We need to make the best frogs for our terrariums.

You're assuming that the "ugly" frogs don't ever get picked / sold.

They do get sold....they ALL do. It's not like the drab, shy or odd sized frogs get fed to an oscar fish like in the betta hobby.

Wasn't assuming that at all. In that case it just happens to be that the dull colored, less patterned, shy, etc frogs are being paired up.

Wouldn't feeding the shy, odd shaped, dull colored frogs to something be more natural as this would probably be the case in the wild anyway??

No. It would come down to luck and the ability to survive, not color, size, or shape.

I missed this one earlier. It seems there are people whose common sense is telling them that many of the "experts" aren't really on the mark when it comes to random mating. It was a rough start, but it does look like the attacks were avoided for the most part.

I think many in the hobby realize that good selective breeding methods do really need to be learned in this hobby.

I selectively breed..... I select a nice group of about 6 frogs from a select breeder that I trust....then I let them randomly choose mates....they frogs get it right every time.

One thing I should add is that breeding for small size is HARD. There are many things, bad things, that can reduce the size of an animal. This is not for the faint of heart or someone in a hurry.
