  White Plains NY Show recap
Posted by: Coqui - 07-13-2015, 11:11 AM - Forum: U.S Regional Groups, People, Shows, Gatherings and Events - Replies (1)

I went this Sunday to the White Plains reptile show, it looked like it was a nice turn out of visitors. Also, it looked like there were more dart frog vendors then ever before. Some new faces and got to meet some experience froggers for the first time.
Picked up some supplies, looking forward to the next one.

'Sugar Cookie' dusted Fruit flies ?
Posted by: Philsuma - 07-10-2015, 01:31 PM - Forum: Feeder Insects, Nutrition - How to feed your Frogs - No Replies

For the first time on over 12 in the Dart Frog hobby, I saw a reference that someone was 'scared' to dust their fruit flies too much. They used the term 'ghosting' the flies - coating them so much that they are white.
The term I have used is 'Sugar Cookie' - meaning the same thing.

Is a heavy coating of superfine supplement 'Bad' ? Not in my opinion.

There are no measurements or calibrations with dusting, so we are basically only left with two options:

To dust or not to dust.

Dusting is pretty straight forward. It's hard to go 'half way' and dust all the flies a little.

NOT Dusting is skipping a dusting one or more times sequentially. Not a bad thing either, but back to dusting amounts.

There has been a valid argument AGAINST Hypervitaminosis - too much vitamins. The reverse, Hypovitaminosis is what I'm worried about MUCH more. Of course Vitamin 'A' must always be used in a lower dosage, but this post is mainly referring to Calcium and the 'other' vitamins and supplements commonly found in commercial Dart Frog supplements.

It is well known that all Fruit Flies will immediately begin 'grooming' or removing the power with their legs. This is the argument for thorough and frequent dusting. I prefer this method. The 'Sugar Cookie'.

  'Frog talk' recordings compiled somewhere?
Posted by: Sherman - 06-30-2015, 11:47 PM - Forum: General Questions and Comments - Replies (4)

I have had the privilege of seeing many good frog talks at various meetings. (NAAC, FrogDay, SACAS, NYC frog group, etc.) Some of these talks have substantially altered my view of the hobby. Even the bad ones are good. I have started to record some of them (terribly mind you).

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good way for us to create a central repository for such videos.

How much are my frogs an' stuff worth if I sell them?
Posted by: Philsuma - 06-30-2015, 11:43 AM - Forum: Dart Frog Classifieds - Replies (2)

I'm seeing a lot of questions about 'getting out of the hobby', and " I paid/have this much into my 'set-up'' ect, and here are my 02 cents. I'm basing this off of what I have seen being in the Dart Frog hobby for @ 12 years and the overall 'Exotic Animal Hobby' for over 35 years.

This is a hobby, and as a hobby, the depreciation of animals and goods is extreme. The only items in this hobby that I would say, hold their value, would be proven pairs or proven groups of frogs.

As for tanks, enclosures, aquariums, lights, wood, ect ect....I would say recouping 50% of the purchase price would be almost a TOP or high end, most likely 30% seems an average to me.

Similar with single frogs or unknown groups, sexes, ages ect. If you can recover 50% or more of what you paid, then that is more on the rare side.

Proven or rare frogs and groups ect have the highest 'resale' value. They can certainly be sold for over 50% and sometimes closer to 100% IF you are patient and have connections and people to vouch for you and the animals.

90 gallon vivarium - too large for 2 frogs?
Posted by: Oanomochi - 06-28-2015, 03:53 PM - Forum: Feeder Insects, Nutrition - How to feed your Frogs - Replies (3)

I've had 2 d. luecomelas frogs a little over a week. I have a few hundred pin-head crickets and dump 15-20 crickets in the enclosure per day. I'm worried that the frogs don't have enough time to eat the crickets before they hide and may eventually become malnourished. Is this a common problem with larger vivariums? The viv is HEAVILY planted.
