Egg laying break for Females ?
#1
i have a pair of Leucomelas that have been laying at least a clutch of eggs every month for the past 3 months. the eggs seemed to be more abundant and more tads and eggs have survived from the first clutch as opposed to the latter. this being observed makes me wonder if my female needs a break. do i need to separate the pair for a while to let her have a rest? she does not seem to be as fat as she used to be, but she looks to be in good health and very active. any suggestions?

I would just feed more to keep her weight up. Be sure to dust too.

My azureus have been laying pretty regularly, and my female seems to fluctuate between fat and not-so-fat. By no means does she ever get skinny, but you can tell when she's just laid. This has been going on since July and she's fine...eats like a pig though.

hey there,

i found a neat new worm at frogday in atlanta (thats where i am now). its called a phoenix worm and it is small enough for a dart to eat. im going to give her some of those b/c they are high in calcium and protein. should help her too. and she loves mini meal worms, so it should be a hit. give them a try if you can find them. ~Lauren

Sorry for the thread hijack....

What are these phonenix worms/grubs. The only viable google hit I get are armstrongs selling them and they give no info on what it is.

hey josh

they are soldier fly larvae. they look like little flour beetle larvae or thinner grub worms almost. very wiggly, so they catch attention easily. my frogs have loved them so far! i cant remember the guy's name i bought them from, but he was a vendor at frog day, so perhaps you can find him. ~Lauren

That's great. When they become more commercially available I'll be sure to buy some.

Hi Lauren,
I would say that breeding your leucs and getting production of a clutch , two , or three, a month, for three months, would not be considered over-breeding. I am guessing this is not the problem.
There are many, many, reasons for eggs going bad.
You mentioned that the female looked a bit skinny. Have you had fecals done?

hey rich

thanks for the reply.
the female leuc does not look skinny, so much as a little less rotund than ususal, on and off, lately. she still looks healthy, but once she started laying eggs is when i noticed this pattern.
the pair will be getting fecals this week or next. i am currently putting my vet through "fecal exam hell" right now with my other darts. i have my progress listed in another post. http://dartden.com/viewtopic.php?t=656
they were tested earlier this year with clean results, but i didnt test them repeatedly, which seems to be crucial to accurate results. i will let you know when i get their fecals back and the results.
its good to know that they are not over-breeding. this is my first breeding pair, so its all new to me (and a little scary).

hey rich,

i had a fecal done on the pair of leucs (and my newly aquired cobalts) this morning and it came out clear. i will re-test in a week and post results.
