Exciting, folks!
THIS, in my opinion, is the most significant importation of Dart Frogs that has occurred in the U.S Hobby to date !
Not just the rarity but the scope of the endevour and all that went into it. Sustainable captive breeding. Excellent and cutting edge husbandry methods. Paperwork - certificates, invoices, tracking numbers, CITES documents, individual animal codes. Sexed adults. Excellent packaging and transport. Team effort hobbyist involvement. The list of accolades goes on and on.
I'll be posting some pics here in this very thread but please FEEL FREE to interject with ANY comments or questions regarding the animals or the operation. Chris Sherman will be around here too hopefully and we can try to add even more buzz to this important milestone event.

I did a dumb and bought frogs before I had a viv ready to go. Luckily they're small and will need at least 2-4 months to grow out before they'll be big enough to move in. Of course the day I get them our power gets knocked out for an indeterminate amount of time...3 days with no fix in sight. They are currently living with a friend who is experienced with frogs and reptiles, and who has power and heating, so no pics for the moment.
The tank has been liberally cleaned with a mild bleach solution and thoroughly rinsed with clean water and is air drying as I type. I have hydroton being delivered tomorrow, spag moss and coco coir acquired, and leaf litter at the ready. I'll be picking up substrate barrier and some ABG mix from a local place probably Tuesday or Wednesday, and plant hunting this weekend at another local place I used to breed fish and fire bellies for.
Springtail and FF cultures, besides what I'm currently feeding, and supplements will be trickling in over the next few days.
Pics and updates as I have them.

Chris Carpenter-Manassas, VA
Species- Oophaga pumilio Black Jeans
Line/Origin- Scott Menigoz. Was unable to find line at time of purchase.
Age- Approximately a year old
Quantity: 1.1.0
Price- $250 OBO
Preferred Payment Method- PayPal or Cash
Shipping- LOCAL ONLY or drive within reason
I am looking to sell my pair of Black Jeans. I have been watching these guys very closely lately and there has been a lot of mating rituals and calling going on. The female has been in the film canister almost constantly for the past week or two, but sometimes comes out when the male is sitting at the top of the tank calling her. I purchased these guys from Scott Menigoz and he was unable to find the line that these guys are from, but they are CB. I was told that they were both females because he hadn't heard any calling from either of them and they were both pretty plump. Before I even got them home I heard calling. The male since then has called pretty much every day.
I would prefer to sell this pair locally if possible. I am willing to drive a little bit and meet someone half way if you're in the surrounding areas.
Not looking for trades.
I do have a 12x12x18 ExoTerra that I will sell along with them if needed. $300 OBO for everything. Shoot me offers or a PM if you have any questions.

Sad news for the hobby - WIKIRI

For those of yall who arent aware, WIKIRI is in threat of a major natural disaster and may not bounce back. Here is their statement below.
Dear WIKIRI supporters,
This is to let you know about a special circumstance that requires urgent action from the amphibian pet trade community.
Wikiri, the Ecuadorian leading Latin American enterprise of amphibian bio-commerce that currently supplies amphibians for the legal pet trade has began to pass through difficult times.
Wikiri core facilities (a nearly 4.800 square meters) are located in Quito Ecuador, which has recently became under the threat of a natural disaster. The Cotopaxi volcano, which is located at about 40 km distance as the crow flies from Wikiri has began an eruption process. Severe eruptions occur roughly every 100 years with the most recent major eruption being in 1877.
See the BBC news:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-33972731
See official updated information on the current volcano activity
http://www.seguridad.gob.ec/volcancotopaxi/
According to predictive studies done by volcanologists, our main facilities will be wiped out by lahars (water and mud) from the volcano, after glaciers of the volcano are diluted by the pyroclastics.
Wikiri and our partner Institution Centro Jambatu for Amphibian Research and Conservation must evacuate as soon as possible.
Moving and keeping commercial and endangered frogs to a new site requires further investments. Although we, Wikiri people, are deeply committed to continue with our bio-commerce enterprise, there is not guarantee that it will happen. If economic loses due to the volcano are major, Wikiri might have to either stop or delay its activities, thus the continuous supply of frogs by Wikiri is at risk of being interrupted or stopped for an indefinite amount of time.
Thus we offer up for sale all the frogs currently in stock (all frogs 3 months and older) while conditions remain stable. We urge your continued support by purchasing the following frogs that are currently in stock through your local distributor ASAP.
Agalychnis spurrelli
Hypsiboas picturatus
Gastrotheca riobambae
Epipedobates tricolor (Rio morph)
Epipedobates anthonyi (Isabel morph)
Dendrobates sylvaticus (Paru morph)
Ceratophrys stolzmanni
If the volcano erupts, there is a strong probability that the airport will be closed, and the ability to ship future exportations will not be guaranteed. So, please place your order as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance for your generous support.

Some beginner questions

Hi everyone! I'm not necessarily new to the hobby of keeping amphibians, but am new to the dart frog hobby. I have a few questions that may seem a little dumb but after lurking and searching through threads for a bit now and not finding exactly what I was looking for, I figured I'd just ask.
So, firstly, cleaning a new viv.
A friend of mine is passing off some of his Exo Terra tanks to me after he decided to sell off his gecko collection and move on to other things. They've all been emptied out and at least rinsed, but since they've been used by other residents my question is can/should I rinse them out with a bleach solution or other cleaning solution before building and planting? No frogs will be in residence for a few months but I will likely be planting it in the next 2-3 weeks.
Next is storing cultures.
I haven't really seen anyone storing their fruit fly cultures or what have you in, say, a clear locking tote/sweaterbox. Is this sort of thing done? If not, why? Does it adversely affect the cultures? I understand mite infestations are a thing and keeping everything together might be a poor idea so I would likely have multiple totes. These questions stem from owning a small ninja cat who will find and knock over anything that isn't bigger or heavier than her and wanting to avoid the inevitable. I'm not concerned about her bothering the viv at all, and as much as I'd like to have a dedicated frog room, we just don't have that right now.
And lastly, more of a curiosity sort of thing.
I'm really wanting to get Yellowbacks as my first frogs and I've seen comments along the lines of them just not being as common in the hobby as they used to be. A lot of the hobby seems to be person-to-person or word of mouth and not so much readily available online when something goes down, so I was wondering if their drop in popularity had anything to with that, or if they just went out of style sort of thing.

Cleaning glass on Enclosures

Hard water deposits is usually the hardest to clean but I actually treat all glass issues the same.
I use a paint scraper with a FRESH razor blade and some water or perhaps lemon juice to lubricate the scraping.
And then scrape away! Razor blading fixes 97% of all 'glass issues and ills"
There are some who recommend a jewelry polishing compound and rubbing ect but meh....If the razor won't clean the glass nicely then it's into the recycle bin ya go!
