UK tightening up on importations of dart frogs
Posted by: Philsuma - 04-30-2015, 07:15 PM - Forum: Science, Conservation and News - Replies (2)

Wow. First I heard of this. Good. Score one for Captive breeding and importation paperwork. Unfortunate for this particular guy but as it should be.

USA hobbyists... better buy from legit sources and good people.

Fruit Fly cultures dying - turned black
Posted by: cleigm84 - 04-23-2015, 03:15 PM - Forum: Feeder Insects, Nutrition - How to feed your Frogs - Replies (12)

Help...

I have had a fruit fly culture consistently producing for the last 2 years. I moved to Florida and now they are all dying including the 4 new ones I ordered from Josh's Frogs. The fruit fly media stays damp and everything is good temperature wise in my apartment. The temp is consistently around 75 inside and humidity is good. I find that the cultures turn black and all the flies in it die within 2 weeks. What is going on?? I have never had this problem before.

  5....$5......$5 Bromeliads!
Posted by: Halter - 04-20-2015, 03:40 PM - Forum: Everything else for Sale or Trade - Replies (5)

I first want to start this by saying that I have not been an active member on here for quite some time. I do particularly love reading threads and learning, but my time has been very limited because of our move. We have finally made the big leap from PA to TX and I am looking forward to start contributing back to this community as much as it has contributed to me over the last few years (Dart Den).

With that being said, we got a surplus of some types of our bromeliads and we are offering our special of $5 a brom, all day everyday! We have experience shipping live plants and offer affordable shipping. Not to mention we also have Tree Fern Fiber boards, Cork Bark, and plenty of other cool stuff to mount these epiphytes on.

Here is one my baby red eyes on a "Mo Pepper Please" all of our broms are FROG FREE and are disinfected with a 5% bleach solution prior to leaving my facility.

My website is www.genesisexotics.com and if you would have any questions feel free to send me a PM or email me at genesisexotics@gmail.com

  Beginner Questions
Posted by: cam - 04-19-2015, 03:57 PM - Forum: Beginner Questions and Comments - Replies (6)

So I am new to dart frogs and have been wanting them for a long time. I have gotten a 46 gallon bow-front aquarium and I am hoping to put a group of frogs in it by this summer. After finding out their care from lots of websites i still have a few questions: What frog should I get? I was thinking about leucs or auratus el cope do these do well in groups? Are these OK for the average beginner? I have heard the leucs are hard to breed is that true? Also Do dart frogs need specific kinds of wood and leaves or can I use any? What kind of water do you mist them with? And what is a reliable online breeder? Thanks

  Moving Sale
Posted by: LiveToViv - 04-19-2015, 09:03 AM - Forum: Dart Frog Classifieds - Replies (3)

I just can't keep up with the maintenance anymore; plus, I'm moving soon into a smaller apartment. Please let me know if you are interested in any of the following. If you are SERIOUSLY interested, I can provide more info about each of the frogs. I would prefer to sell to a breeder as that was my original intention.

4- Ameerega pepperi 'Abiseo'
4- Ameerega trivittata 'Greenback'
3- Dendrobates auratus (blue, green, and reticulated)
2- Dendrobates azureus (proven pair - and lots of tads if interested)
5- Mantella madagascariensis
4- Phyllobates terribilis 'Orange' (mature - male(s) and female(s))
3- Phyllobates vittatus

  Vivarium Makeover
Posted by: Bawb_b - 04-17-2015, 04:12 PM - Forum: Enclosures, Setup and Construction - Replies (5)

So I've had a 29 gal Viv (my first Viv construction) set up for a year now. I never put any frogs in it because I didn't like the way it came out. I had just discovered the world of vivariums and ended up doing almost every beginner mistake. I added a waterfall (which broke/flooded everything), I didn't know that I could carve out the GS background and left the walls about 3" thick. And my substrate had drainage problems and could only get java moss and other marginal plants to grow.

So, I finally decided to tear it down and remake it. I thought I'd be fun/interesting to share with all who are interested.

Here's the "before" tank

Now here it is after tearing down the GS walls

Here it is after scraping out the old silicone. Which was easier than I imagined. Some water/humidity accumulated in between the Silicone and glass (weird).

And now for my least favorite and most smelliest part

Rough layout of the wood placement

And now a (sloppy) layer of GS background
