For the last few weeks I've been short with my fruit flies and instead of sending off for some I've been buying them from PetCo. I happened to notice about three weeks ago they had an unusually large amount of cultures than they normally have. Most of the time they generally have about three or four but now all three of the stores have at least 12-15 cultures at various stages of development(At this point I'll assume you know what I'm about to tell you..)
Well - Tonight I bought a few things there along with a culture and while I was passing by the reptile cages something caught my attention. It only flashed by in my peripheral vision but somehow triggered something familiar in the deep recesses of my mind. I looked again and sure enough, there in the water dish of that enclosure was a 3-4 month old D. tinctorius "Cobalt".
I'm not some elitist or arrogant dart frog keeper who thinks only us anointed can keep them but the average shlock pet customer does not have the experience or knowledge base to deal with these animals. That and the fact that they aren't going to be willing to spend the kind of money to raise them properly nor are they willing to spend the time learning about them before they make a purchase.
I should have known this was going to happen when I saw Green Tree Pythons there a couple of months ago.

There has been some recent discussion on culturing very small size fruit flies and how they are utilized for the dart frog hobby.
Fruit Flies continue to be the staple of the dart frog hobby. They are not only the easiest of all food items to culture and maintain, but they are the best food item to accept and have superfine powders adhere to them - which is essential in keeping all Dart Frogs alive and healthy.
If you think you can replace fruit flies with anything else - springtails, isopods or god forbid, crickets or 'crix', you are destined to fail and your frogs will die. It's just that simple.
TINY froglets, R. reticulata and O. pumilio 'escudo' quickly come to mind, produce some of the smallest froglets in the hobby. They are so small, that they often have a hard time accepting commonly cultured fruit flies - too large. A lot of people attempt to provide them solely with springtails and other microfauna, most of which is never dusted. This often results in the mortality described above. Again, it is essential IMO, to get them on small melanogaster fruit flies as soon as possible.
How to culture tiny, 'runty' or stunted fruit flies?
It's pretty easy. Separate one or two cultures of fruit flies from the rest of your cultures. Mark or designate them as such, and locate them on the other side of the room or in a different part of your house or frog room as they are going to be more prone to develop mites. You basically want to keep these cultures at least 4-5 weeks PAST the normal 4 week discard stage. You can continue to use flies from these runty cultures for the normal 4 weeks or so, in fact you must use the flies or the culture will crash and die just like any other. The KEY here is to 'overbreed' the flies - to allow them to go to so many more generations past what they would normally, and to keep them way past the discard date, that they will have so much less 'reproductive efficiency' and start to become smaller. Stunted growth. 'Runty'
Keep them separate and take care when handling and using them, as they are always much more prone to mite infestations. Speaking of mites, this is actually a GOOD thing here for a change. Tiny froglets will also eat the mites.

NYC Poison Dart Frog March Meetup 3/20/15
Date & Time: Friday, March 20 at 7:00pm
Location: Fauna NYC, 265 West 87 St, New York, New York 10024
Fauna is located at 265 W 87th Street (between Broadway & West End Avenue) in Manhattan. Fauna's website is http://www.faunanyc.com/. The closest subway stop is the number 1 train at 86th Street & Broadway. Fauna's phone number is 212-877-2473. If you haven't visited Fauna before, they sell dart frogs, bugs, plants and frogger supplies if you need them. They also sell exotic birds, reptiles, tropical fish and even corals.
Idris Brown will give a presentation on poison dart frog nutrition and supplements.
There will be an auction after the presentation. We are accepting donations of plant cuttings and other frog-related items for the auction. All proceeds will go to a poison dart frog conservation project (to be determined).
This event is open to the public, as such there may be young people in attendance. It's a good thing to share our interest and knowledge with the next generation of hobbyists. You can bring wine/beer but please refrain from drinking until after the young people have left. We don't want to create any problems for our host, so we would appreciate your cooperation.
Hope to see you on the 20th...
