  D. tinctorius behavior
Posted by: Frogopolis - 03-13-2015, 08:43 PM - Forum: Dendrobates Genus - Replies (5)

Do all morphs of D. Tinctorius behave the same? I have a pair of Azureus that are about 29 months old and they have been together since they formed their bond at age 12 months. These two frogs are incredibly tame and come right up to my hand when I feed them. The female is a bit bolder than the male and when I feed them I will hold the vile containing the flies inside the enclosure and the female will actually come up and rest one foot on my finger and the other on the edge of the vile while she eats flies. Neither one of them reacts to my hand being inside their enclosure and will completely ignore what I'm doing unless I have flies.

Do all Tincs behave this way? Although I have the all the species of darts I've wanted if I were to ever buy another dart it would a different morph of Tinctorious. It's nice to have at least one species of dart frog that doesn't disappear into the "jungle" the second I barely touch the door latch.

  Titebond issues
Posted by: Evaradero - 03-13-2015, 07:17 PM - Forum: Enclosures, Setup and Construction - No Replies

Recently i made a 10 g vert with a titebond and tree fern fiber background. All went well, i planted the viv and started let everything grow in. But once the tank got humid, all the titebond seems to have been rehydrated and the viv smells of titebond. I opened the viv and put a fan infront of it for 3 days, and it was fine, then the titebond small came back. Any ideas?

  Vivarium Cooling Idea.......
Posted by: brooks_91 - 03-10-2015, 11:04 PM - Forum: Enclosures, Setup and Construction - Replies (6)

Okay, so here is North Carolina it gets mildly hot and the house stays around 80, but I've noticed that my darts have done the best this winter when they were kept in the high 60's low 70's ( common knowledge anyway).....I have a very open house so it is hard to cool just the area with the frogs, and the basement gets far to cold to heat effectively.

That being said I started looking for a way to cool everybody down that didn't cost me my right kidney, to no avail really. I am the kind of person that will find a way...maybe not the easiest way, but I will. So, here is my idea.

In the process of building my new rack setup I am building my own enclosures (which I may try to sell...idk) and I thought about computer fans on top. This lead to drilling a hole in the top of one and mounting a computer fan....which needless to say was great for air movement, useless for cooling. After some research most ideas were to far fetched or to expensive. I settled on this idea though, take 2 inch pvc tube and put it through the hole made for the fan, connect all the vivs together with pipe and plumb that pip through a decent sized refrigerator. Then using a pretty good size cfm fan to blow the colder air through the pvc and into the vivariums. Now maybe I have missed something along the way more experienced people will catch for me, but I believe this could work fine. We don't need a 50 degree drop, just 10, and with some tinkering with monitoring systems, I think it would be ok.

Ideas....and I know this topic has been discussed, but this was started to get opinions before I went out and started spending money.

  Selling unrelated frogs ?
Posted by: Frogopolis - 03-08-2015, 08:03 PM - Forum: General Questions and Comments - Replies (3)

I want to run something past you guys and you can give me your thoughts...

As I have read so many times on forums and websites people will buy a number of frogs from a particular seller and they will raise them up. If you ever follow the person long enough you sometimes find an ad from them a year or so later selling froglets without talking specifically about the parents or breeding. I have to assume the original seller had raised a large number of froglets from the same parents and once they were 2-3 months began to sell them. Here's where I'm going with all this - Isn't it more than likely that all these frogs have been bred with siblings for many generations?

From day one I have always kept track of each of my frogs, I even have a spreadsheet that lays out everything about each individual frog; origin/breeder, line, sex, etc...I have always made sure that I have never bred related frogs but I have a feeling that the average dart frogger doesn't do this. I've read that it's okay to breed siblings but I won't do this.

Now that the weather is warming up I am going to be selling some of my offspring but I'd like to selling them in groups of 4 or 6 so I can control which frogs go out. I have many grow out containers with froglets being separated by who their parents are. This way if someone buys say, six frogs from me, I can at least tell them that 3 came from this set of parents and the other 3 came from another set of parents that are completely unrelated. Once all of these frogs reach maturity and the buyer knows all the sexes he has, then he can find some other breeder to get whichever sex he may be deficient in.

Would people even care about this? Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks.

Looking for some opinions on my final setup!!
Posted by: joshuaseidman94 - 03-08-2015, 06:25 PM - Forum: Enclosures, Setup and Construction - Replies (1)

Hey guys,
So I have been setting up my vivarium for the past few weeks and finally finished on Friday. I was wondering what you guys think and if anyone had any suggestions?

- I used a 30 gallon tall tank (24"x24"x12")
- 2" tall false bottom made from egg crate and supported by pvc (holes made in pac to prevent stagnant water)
- covered false bottom with gardening mesh
- ABG mix with springtail culture
- background was made using foam insulation that was carved and then waterproofed using drylok and some cement dye
- waterfall was constructed by carving it out of the foam and is fed by my DIY wet dry filter
- Filter was made by making 2 separate compartments in a 5 gallon bucket, the intake side has filter media (bio balls, clay, and charcoal) and then the filtered water flows under the divider and is pumped to the waterfall via a submersible pump.
- Filter is fed via and overflow. I had drilled a 45mm hole in the bottom of the tank and placed a bulkhead on the hole and the overflow over the bulkhead (this prevents overflowing). Additionally, i created a trap door, giving me access to the overflow at any time.

Please let me know if you have any questions or want any information regarding how i made everything!! This was my first vivarium so I look forward to hearing some of your comments!!

Please comment below!!
