  babies or froglets?
Posted by: Philsuma - 03-03-2015, 11:30 PM - Forum: General Questions and Comments - Replies (2)

So much anthropomorphism....frogs don't have 'babies'. Babies come from humans. Frogs produce eggs which turn into larvae or tadpoles which morph into froglets.

Or am I off base / pedantic with all this?

  How many d. tincs?!
Posted by: joshuaseidman94 - 03-02-2015, 05:18 PM - Forum: Beginner Questions and Comments - Replies (3)

So I have been setting up my tank for a few weeks and it will be done tomorrow. Just need to install the filter. It's a 3 gallon tall measuring 24" tall by 24" high by 12" deep. Most people told me I can fit 3 tincs. However, one person got me nervous and said I can't hold anything but 3 thumbnails. Can you please chime in and let me know if I can fit 2-3 tincs? Please note I will be removing the pond area and making it more floor space.

  Vivarium false bottom filtering question
Posted by: joshuaseidman94 - 03-02-2015, 11:25 AM - Forum: Enclosures, Setup and Construction - Replies (6)

So I am almost done setting up my vivarium for my dart frogs that I plan to purchase in the next two weeks at the Long Island Reptile Show on March 15. I have a quick question regarding my filter I am installing. I tried a canister filter but had problems so I returned it and decided that for $20 I might as well build my own wet dry filter. Pretty much I will have a 2" overflow installed under my false bottom that will allow the water to flow into the overflow, down a tube attached to a hole in the bottom of the tank, into the wet dry and then pumped back into my tank down a waterfall via a submersible pump. My biggest issue was deciding how big of a hole to drill in the bottom of my tank. I had ordered a 1" hole diamond drill bit. I had read that for a tank between 25-90 gallons, a 1" hole is big enough. However, with a bulkhead, the tube delivering the water to the filter can only have a diameter of 0.5". Is this big enough to deliver the water to my filter without creating any annoying sounds or having any problems? Keep in mind that my tank only will be holding a maximum of 5 gallons (extra water will be housed in the wet dry so that even after water evaporated, there is enough water to be siphoned to my tank).

Thanks for the input!!

Is it ok to mist with the water from the false bottom? I am using the mist king zip drip system.

  My first viv!
Posted by: George1981 - 03-01-2015, 09:02 AM - Forum: Beginner Questions and Comments - Replies (4)

My name is George and this is my first attempt at an viv. I ve kept fish for a while, so Iam turning that tank in a viv.
I wanted to do a water feature but gave up. The viv has been up and running for about two months now. And I think its time to purchase some frogs!
I ve been looking at Dendrobates tinctorius "citronella".

Deciding on first frog species (experience, info, help)
Posted by: Dan1990 - 02-28-2015, 10:01 PM - Forum: Beginner Questions and Comments - Replies (8)

So I've been talking to josh at joshs frogs and have ordered a few things from him. So far I've been quiet pleased with the service and am thinking about ordering my first dart frogs from him when the time comes.
That said I've been looking over the varieties he has and have narrowed them down to 3 I'm considering. Also I have a question about one they have and its legitimacy.

The 3 are as follows
1.) Dendrobates tinctorius 'Azureus'

2.) Dendrobates tinctorius 'Patricia'

3.) Dendrobates auratus 'El Cope'

The one in question is Dendrobates tinctorius 'Azureus' - Wattley Line
It seems to me to be like the one that has been line bread for the small/no spots that was talked about on here and was not recommended.

Thank you for your help/advice/experience in advance.

I experimented with my Iquitos tadpoles
Posted by: Frogopolis - 02-27-2015, 12:41 AM - Forum: Breeding - Eggs, Tadpoles, Froglets - Replies (4)

I normally leave the eggs and tadpoles inside the film canisters inside the enclosure where they were laid. After they've grown some I usually remove the tadpoles and put each one in its own 2 oz. deli cup with a lid that has several small holes drilled into it. Along with the tadpole I put in a piece of Indian Almond leaf, a little piece of Anacharis and a little piece of Java Moss. The only other food I offer them is Spirulina flakes that have been dusted with Seran Micron growth food. Every 3-4 days I change the water in the deli cups. The water I use is distilled water that has had an Indian Almond leave put into the gallon jug.

This is the way I have always done it for all my frogs. I've never had any problems with my tadpoles or froglets and they all grow to healthy adults.

Recently I decided to experiment. I keep three separate and unrelated groups of R. Amazonica "Iquitos". What I did was take six tadpoles from each enclosure and raised each group of six in its own container. These were Sterilite containers and are 6" long, 5" wide, and 3" inches tall.

Here is what's happened; All tadpoles are fine and healthy and I never observed any aggression or cannibalism. Here is the most important thing; The tadpoles are huge! Far bigger than the ones raised separately and they grew faster also. All the tadpoles were about the same age when I created the groups and they are all at the point where they are now getting their back legs. The coloring on their backs is also brighter and more pronounced.

Any ideas as to why they are bigger with more vibrant colors. By all accounts raising six together should have been a disaster.

Best Led plant light for dome fixture?
Posted by: Dan1990 - 02-26-2015, 11:59 AM - Forum: Enclosures, Setup and Construction - Replies (4)

Well as the title says I'm looking for recommendations for a good LED for the dome light fixture that will light my dart frog viv. I've been researching it but so far I've not had a lot of luck. Most seem to be made for light hoods or are hydrophobic red and blue.
The few I have found that look like an option are reported to lose light intensity within 6-8 months.

Any input would be helpful. Thank you
