Here is a question for Phil

How many people have approached you asking to be a moderator for the forum? Did you grant them mod status?

I am just curious.

I just found out that another popular frog board is rumored to be run by the North Koreans.
Just wanted to make sure this board wasn't going all Kim jong ill/un

  sip morphs and lines question
Posted by: dagnabbit - 02-09-2015, 09:40 PM - Forum: General Questions and Comments - Replies (3)

I was told that green, blue, and yellow sips were the same and true sips different.
I have noticed from talking to people that their green sips spit out blue sips but not yellow.
Then I heard that yellow sips are from a different location then the green.
So Im guessing that green and blue are the same but yellow maybe a different frog.
Any clarity would be helpful
Thanks

  Hydei and mites
Posted by: Frogopolis - 02-09-2015, 03:45 PM - Forum: Feeder Insects, Nutrition - How to feed your Frogs - Replies (10)

The one thing I've always been lousy at in this hobby is culturing fruit flies. For some reason my Hydei cultures always become infested with mites. They will even take over before maggots develop and destroy the whole culture.

I buy flies from a business here in CA that sends me really clean flies. I've looked at these flies when they arrive under a magnifying glass and I never see mites. I will even make new cultures and put them on the opposite side of the house and I still get mites. I freeze the excelsior and put the cups and lids in the freezer overnight and I still get mites.

When I do grow a good, clean Hydei culture I get so many flies that I have to let some of them go. But this is hardly ever the case.

What's happening? What am I doing wrong?

  Big Change for Black Jungle
Posted by: rcteem - 02-08-2015, 09:36 PM - Forum: Introductions and Announcements - Replies (3)

I was so sad to hear this news as I have always wanted to view their greenhouse and retail shop but never got the chance. It has been a pleasure working for this company at trade shows and hope they will have continued success as Michael runs it now and wish noting but best wishes for Richard!!!

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT BY BLACK JUNGLE TERRARIUM SUPPLY!

The owners of Black Jungle are parting ways. After 21 years of innovation within the naturalistic terrarium and vivarium hobby, Richard Revis has decided it’s time to move on to pursue other interests. Michael will continue to operate Black Jungle on a mail order and show/expo level, however the retail showroom and public greenhouse in Turners Falls is planned to be closed by May 31st, 2015.

A series of special events will be held at Black Jungle over the following 4 months to help reduce the plant collection while preparing for this transition. The first big event will be on February 14th, Valentines Day, from 11am until 5pm. We will be offering all live plants at 30% off including many of the hold-back and stock plants from our private collection! Don’t forget to check out the many hold-back adult dart frogs that are currently being offered as well!

This would be a great opportunity to see Richard before he moves to Tennessee later this month and to also have a rare opportunity to acquire certain plants (especially orchids, among others) that may have never been offered to the public! If you cannot make this date, don’t worry - you can pre-schedule a raincheck/special appointment on a later date.

Black Jungle will continue to offer Frogs, Plants, Feeder Fruit Flies and a variety of the more unusual or difficult to find products associated with terrariums and vivariums. Mike will also continue to offer Rainforest Adventure Tours to Central and South America as well.

If you are a local retail customer who frequents our store for the convenience of getting your weekly or monthly fruit flies and supplies, we can make special arrangements to now quickly and inexpensively ship your purchase to your door or local post office for pick up.

Thanks for your continued support and patronage! Watch for more special dates between February and May as our itinerary is confirmed!

  D. Auratus and RETF'S -same area in wild?
Posted by: Frogopolis - 02-08-2015, 05:16 AM - Forum: General Questions and Comments - Replies (2)

Do Costa Rican Auratus and RETF'S occupy the same area in the wild. I understand that the tree frogs spend the majority of the time in the canopy but they must come down to the jungle floor occasionally. I'm wondering if they ever cross paths.

  Jim from Austin's frog wall
Posted by: joneill809 - 02-03-2015, 10:19 PM - Forum: Vivarium, Frog Room and Plant Photographs - Replies (91)

Figured it was time to start a generic topic on the work I've been doing with my frog wall. I've been consolidating my vivs and my collection a bit as I focus on Lorenzo and Robertus. Here are the individual threads I have going on various frogs in my collection:

Lorenzo: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=7466
Robertus: viewtopic.php?f=55&t=8532
True Sipaliwini: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=8195
Azureus breeding: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=6384
Azureus viv: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=6303
Bakhuis (18" cube build): viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7420
Red Galactanotus (120 ghostviv): viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7981
hood builds: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7615

Over the summer I went all in and started concentrating my collection in one area. Here's a shot of the new layout, with my Robertus, True Sips and Lorenzo vivs as the 18x18x24, and some group grow out 2.5's for tads (upper shelf), and 20L for froglets (left). There are some other grow outs in the cabinets, along with electrical and misting.

The Galacts, Azureus and Bakhuis are still in other displays around the house, but the majority of my frogs are now concentrated here. I like the 18x18x24 footprint, and I've spent a good bit of time on building custom hoods for each one that actively control the airflow through the vivs that I can adjust seasonally. I'll keep the other threads going as well for morph specific updates, but I'll use this one for random shots and generic vivarium stuff moving forward.

More to come.

Petsmart online order / in store pickup deal through 2/1
Posted by: joneill809 - 01-27-2015, 04:20 PM - Forum: Hot Store Deals - No Replies

There's an offer going on at Petsmart where you can purchase items online and have them picked up in a store at a decent discount. For example, an Exo Terra 18x18x24 can be had for:

119.99 list
-24.00 online purchase discount ("Save an Extra 20% when Choosing Store Pickup!")
-10.00 in store pickup discount ("Save $10 off your $60 Store Pickup Order")
$85.99 purchase price (plus tax)

I've seen better pricing on periodic sales (~$70) but this is pretty close. Anyhow, the extra $10 runs through February 1.
